charting the history of the Coventry music in the 70's and beyond from the perspective of a music fanzine I ran back then and the Writers' Cafe Vox blog promoting a spoken word and acoustic venue I run now on Teesside but this site for drafts and demos of some of my many songs and poems written since I was 15 back in 1966. The recordings on here are mostly digitally enhanced cassette recordings, getting the song ideas down not professional or recent recordings although a few were recorded on a four track portastudio with various musicians. (so you'll have to excuse the recording quality of some of the tracks but I like listening to things like the Bootleg Bob Dylan albums - hearing the works in progress, the process, the try outs etc.) I've put these on because the apart from giving them an unexpected airing, they mostly tell another part of the story about the Coventry music scene in the 70's or the creative writing scene on Teesside during the 80's and 90's which I was also involved with developing via the magazine Outlet and my many creative writing classes for the Workers Educational Association and Leeds University Adult Education. I've tried to contexturise the songs with the inspiration, intentions, process of writing, sometimes with alternative versions. Hope some of you will find it interesting. Some of them have been performed, lyrics printed my poetry anthologies or found their way on to cassette and some written for my friends bands or performed a performance poems.
Many of the people involved in the songs you may not have heard of but there are a few from the Coventry music scene that have since become known world wide - one song for instance was originally set to music by Pete Waterman in the early 70's long before he was internationally famous.
Hope you enjoy..
